Helping Students Use Textual Sources Persuasively
1. Kantz says the facts, opinions and arguments are what you make out of them. If you just read a paper with the main topic you will only get the “facts”. An opinion is what you take out of the reading (if you truly read).
2. Some of the things Kantz list are that the students don’t know are misunderstand or don’t fully comprehended the text. Most students read story of the text and don’t fully understand. And as a students read they expect the source to be telling the whole truth.
4. No I do not think Kantz contradicts herself in the article. She wants the reader to view the sources neither fully as stories or facts. She says you have to find the gap between facts and readings. Kantz just states that with both stories and repositories of truth they should form their
own opinion.
6. Yes, while doing papers in High School I just always read the main topic of the paper. I see now in order to gain the real information of a paper you must dig into the reading. So yes Kantz has changed my idea and approach on reading texts.
By doing this assignment I gave me the chance to reflect and understand more about research for papers. To truly gain the right information
you must not only read the passage but you must make your own opinions. This assignment taught me to go deeper in analyzing an article to truly understanding it.
