As I entered my second semester in my freshmen year, I was in a different English 1102 class. While I was there for two weeks, I soon realized due to difference of opinion, I found myself questioning whether I was able to grow as a student. A couple days later I found myself in Dr. Jaroszewski’s classroom. As I entered this classroom, I found myself at more comfort. I saw myself being able to grow more as a writer; this class was more about discussion and self evaluation. This English class made me elaborate more in my papers and go into depth with my writing.
As I began my freshman year in early August, I didn’t know what to expect when it came to English class. My high school was the typical high school, we had to write papers but it was more of a check list rather than the quality of the writing. For that reason I have never been the best or strongest writer. The biggest obstacle I had in English 1102 was learning how to write from a different point of view, this would have had to been my biggest frustration as well. Meetings with my professor and small group collaboration with other classmates helped me improve on my ideas of writing. I have not yet resolved all my obstacles regarding writing styles but I have improved from where I was last
year.
The most beneficial concept I learned in my English 1102 was as I said before, writing in different styles other than a check list. The two major papers I had due thsi semester revolved more about my understanding of things rather than facts. Class discussion were more of sharing our writing or thoughts and asking for feedback, this brought a significant change just for the fact I become more acceptable to others comments. In high school, I was so used to the classic five paragraph papers and all your ideas had to fit within this limit. When I came into English 1102 my professor had us write using personal pronouns, contractions, slang and all the things I was told never to do in high school. As the semester progressed, so did my writing and I began to learn that not all writing had to be so black and white. The one assignment I had this semester that has improved my writing the most would had have to be my Literacy Analysis paper. The literacy analysis paper gave me the chance to not only reflect on my past, but also to realize the opportunity I have been granted.
Over this semester I had the chance to participate in many class and small group interactions. My small group interactions in class gave me the chance to not only share my opinion but also to hear others. Over the years I have always struggled in being able to voice my opinion for the fact that I always felt as if my opinion didn’t matter or it was wrong. By having small groups, I had the chance to change that. Being able to talk to others and share my opinion made me understand regardless if I was right or wrong, I should share my opinion. Being able to hear others opinion also showed me that all opinions matter and more than one opinion can be right. Over this semester, class work
and group assignments have shown me that working together in class is not the only place where I will have to work with people.
This year has showed me if I put in hard work everything will pay off. I have always struggled in English but I can honestly say that with the help of this class I can become a better writer. Writing about my past and current events in society has only strengthened my way of writing in different ways. Over the next three years I plan not only to become a better writer but also to have more faith in my writing.
